"Mixed feelings about the school"

I actually went to a c of e school myself and it was similar to you in that it was hymns in assemblies and praying or “quiet reflection” but I get the impression the school is actually quite religious. The top criteria for acceptance (other than siblings and looked after children) is all about being religious.

"Our son goes to a C of E school and my husband and I are atheists"

Our son goes to a C of E school and my husband and I are atheists. When we looked round we didn't feel it was overly religious, and the faith wasn't high up in their acceptance criteria. He's been there two years and it is fantastic. A top performing primary, and in terms of religion, yes they do have a little prayer before they eat, and in assemblies, but from what I can gather from our son, very little else apart from required curriculum.

"Mixed feelings about the school"

At least half the kids at the local religious schools had parents who pretended to be Christian just to get their kids into a good C of E or Catholic school. They ticked the box, the kids got in and then they gradually stopped attending. ... And this is how the scam works. That said, they're usually very good schools.
