Ysgol Calon y Dderwen

Ysgol Calon y Dderwen is a new English-medium community primary school located on Park Street in Newtown, Powys, Wales. The school was established in September 2021 following the merger of Ladywell Green Infants School and Hafren Junior School, and it currently operates from the sites of the former schools. In September 2025, the school expanded to include the site of Treowen C.P. School, with plans for all pupils to eventually move to a new purpose-built building on the current Ysgol Calon y Dderwen site. The school is part of the North Powys Well-being Programme, which includes plans for a new health and well-being campus in Newtown. Ysgol Calon y Dderwen serves pupils from nursery age up to statutory school age, with approximately 250 pupils on roll. The school has a strong foundation learning provision, helping pupils quickly settle into routines and make progress, especially those who enter with literacy and numeracy skills below the expected level. Staff are effective language role models, supporting pupils in developing their speaking and listening skills. The curriculum emphasizes reading, writing, and mathematics, with a focus on improving writing and problem-solving skills. The school is recognized for its supportive environment and commitment to pupil well-being.
