Ysgol Afon Wen

Ysgol Afon Wen is a new all-age through school serving the community of Hawthorn, Pontypridd, which opened in September 2024. The school was formed by merging pupils from the former Hawthorn High School, Hawthorn Primary School, and the English Medium stream of Heol y Celyn Primary School. It is located on the site of the former Hawthorn High School and offers education for children aged 3 to 16, including nursery provision. The school features a modern 28-classroom teaching block for Key Stages 2-4, refurbished primary facilities, and a new childcare facility for children aged 2-5, which opened in early 2025. The development was part of a major £79.9 million investment in Greater Pontypridd schools and was designed with sustainability in mind, aiming for net zero carbon operation. The school is known for its vibrant community, dynamic learning environment, and extensive outdoor learning areas.
