Ron Dearing UTC

Ron Dearing UTC is a university technical college (UTC) located on Kingston Square in Kingston upon Hull, England. It opened in September 2017 and is sponsored by the University of Hull along with several major local employers, including KCOM, Reckitt Benckiser, Siemens Gamesa, Smith & Nephew, and Spencer Group. The school is named after Lord Dearing, a senior civil servant, and is known for its employer-led approach to education, focusing on engineering, creative arts, and technical digital subjects. Students aged 14 to 18 can study a mix of GCSEs, A Levels, and technical qualifications, with a curriculum shaped by real-world industry projects and partnerships. The school boasts state-of-the-art facilities such as mechatronics workshops, STEAM Studios, digital labs, and a virtual reality suite. In 2022, Ron Dearing UTC expanded by acquiring a disused fire station next door, which was converted into STEAM Studios to further enhance creative arts and engineering education. The school has a reputation for strong attendance and close ties with local industry, giving students a unique edge in university and apprenticeship applications. Its central location next to Hull New Theatre makes it a prominent part of the city’s educational landscape.
